Reference books for Maths

The choice for reference books for Mathematics depends on the requirements of the students. Some just want to clear the exams, others want to to have an satisfactory knowledge of subjects without bothering to top in class, and there are a few who want to have complete knowledge of the topic.

If you want to study a topic without the help of your Maths teacher who is teaching you in the class then there are two options : (1) to seek the help of private coaching or (2) to study by yourself

However, majority of the private coachings all over India teaching Maths are not upto the mark due to lack of skilled teachers.

For those students who want to study on their own are some suggestions :

Always first start with the text book prescribed by the state or c.b.s.e. board. I would suggest students of c.b.s.e. board also to go through books of state board as the topic is explained more comprehensively in those books

when studying from books always read the introduction to the topic followed by the examples.

form a habit of writing down main points as well as the solved answers in the examples

once you are through with text book, you would have some basic idea of the topic though solving qustions in the exersise would not be possible for many

now comes the reference book selection part

there are many good reference books out there most important thing is that main questions in all of these books would still be the same ( you can check this by comparing ten different books in your school library )

then how do you decide which is best for you ?

( please note that I do not get any commission for suggesting any book )

One particular book which I used to suggest to students many years ago was by Manjeet Singh which was one of the best book I had seen for all classes upto class 12. You should always go to your school library and issue yourself a book and then try to go through it at home, in this way if you feel that you do not like the book as per your requirement then you can always try other book.

Some good books once you are able to solve the questions in the text books are by R.D.Sharma , R.S. Aggarwal

When I used to teach in schools and was running my coaching classes, many salesmen for various books used to give me free sample copy in the hope that I would refer it to students and this practise still continues in many schools all over India.

No board exams for class 10

The new policy of discontinuing board exams from class 10 onwards may be popular with students but I strongly feel that board exams are a necessity because :-

- it gives a realistic position of a students learning

- most schools/ teachers give good marks in annual/final exams to students upto class 9th

- majority of students wont take core subjects such as Maths and Science seriously

- in long term it will lead to deficiency in skilled technical manpower as students won't study Maths and Science
